“Hold On To Now” is a song by Australian pop star Kylie Minogue which I heard for the first time while I was visiting my Mom and my godson a couple of months ago. It somehow got stuck in my mind, because a) the lyrics and b) it’s catchy as fuck.
Somehow, the title became a bit of a credo for me as well for this year in general and my photography in particular. Capturing the NOWs, those little moments that otherwise will fade away and become all but a memory. If at all.
So the other day, I was out and about to take pics of the sunset behind the house I live in, and while I was waltzing around with my actual camera (as opposed to my phone only), I saw this little blowball amidst some greenery and decided I needed to take a photo of this. Crouching behind the dandelion now ready to spread their seeds, I managed to take this lovely shot.
A moment of peace.
It also made me smile inwardly and outwardly. Just one little moment in which time didn’t matter. The world didn’t matter. A little dandelion / blowball. Childhood memories of when it was a fun activity to pluck a blowball and watch the little parachutes going on their adventure. Happiness. The levity of it all. Being carefree and not worrying about what the next day was going to bring.
Just …being IN THE MOMENT and letting go of the negativity, just like the seeds of the dandelion. And at the same time enclosing the feeling, the Now, inside you. Keeping it with you as a memory to make you smile when things are rough again. The peace and quiet in your mind and soul.
This is why the song hit home. And why I chose it as a theme for my photography this year – and probably also for the next years as well. To create memories of better times.
And isn’t that something we all appreciate?
