Shine on, you crazy diamond

I usually don’t talk about this a lot, as I always fear being judged yet again, because you know, “Ah, it’s Kiwi and they’re not right in their head, anyway.” But for some reason, I felt like telling this … basically, I’ve been meaning to do so for a couple of weeks now, but haven’t really had the mindframe to tackle the topic. However, one of the last books I read last year was Stephen King’s “Doctor Sleep”, the long awaited sequel to “The Shining” (which happens to be one of my fav King books).

While I was reading about the Shining, somehow I started pondering some things that …happened… to me. Things I don’t have a real explanation for, but which I don’t really believe are coincidental, too. Some were clearly in the shits and giggles category, others were a bit more serious, but they still HAPPENED.

Let’s have a look, shall we?

First, the Shits and Giggles category:

The year is 2005, and Liverpool FC are facing AC Milan in the Champions League final. LFC are down 0-3 at the half, and I grab a TV magazine to look for something else, since I felt we’re going to witness a blood bath here. Dad comes home, asks for the score, and I say, “3-0 Milan, and I am actually looking for something else to watch.”
He replies that he was going to walk the dogs now, and I half seriously, half jokingly blurt out: “I’mma tell you what’s gonna happen: Liverpool will score three now and win the game in the end.”
Dad gives me a “Yeah, RIGHT!” look, goes for a short walk with the dogs, and well, the second half of the game starts just as I had somewhat predicted; namely, Liverpool putting 3 past Milan’s goalie. (They also went to win the title in the end; in a penalty shootout.)
Dad comes back, looks at the telly, looks at me, telly, me, telly, then: “Since when do you have some kind of second sight?”
I got a good chuckle out of this, because it was so totally unlikely, given that Milan were dominating Liverpool left, right and center, and just because of some genius sub-ons did LFC get that second wind to turn the game around. Fuck’s sakes, I should’ve placed a bet on this, I’d have made some lovely cash here!

Some years later, I had in the meantime moved to Berlin, weird things hadn’t happen in a while, when the first round of the DFB Pokal is being drawn.
Hansa Rostock are waiting for their opponent, and I am sitting here: “It’s 100% Hertha BSC.”
The little orb opens up … yep, you guessed it: Hertha BSC.
Same in the second round, when the Old Lady got a home game, which was, back then, a very rare feat. Me, “It’s Cologne.”
Orb opens … yep, another correctly guessed opponent.
I definitely got a giggle out of this.
Then, Hertha got to play internationally again, and the Group Stage is announced. Me, “Lyon, Bilbao or (another team I’ve forgotten) in the group would be fun.”
They got fucking Bilbao.
I …dunno??
And in this season’s DFB Pokal shenanigans, I had another one of *those* moments: Arminia Bielefeld are waiting for their opponent, and for some reason, I am here, “Hamburger SV would be funny …” (They have some kind of fan friendship and share the same club colors, black-white-blue.)
Y’all …
I was laughing so hard!

Of course, it could really be just a coincidence, but I don’t really believe in it, since this shit was spot on, and there were some kinda “vibes” (for the lack of a better word) I felt in those moments.

And now for the HUHWTAF!? Category, I present thee …

I woke up one fine day and had Tom Petty’s song “Free Fallin'” stuck in my head. I went into the bathroom, humming the tune, switch on the radio …only to be greeted by that very song. The same thing happened again a couple of weeks later, and with the same song, too. Sure made me raise an eyebrow.

I would think of a friend of mine who lived in the neighborhood, and a couple of moments later, she rang the doorbell. Happened a couple of times, actually.

Last year, after I had been all systems Go! for a trip to the UK to see one of my fav bands play a home town gig for months, I said to my friend that I somehow wasn’t feeling the trip anymore. I couldn’t exactly pinpoint it, but there were those vibes again I had felt a couple of times earlier. There was something off (for the lack of a better word), and a couple of days later, their guitarist announced on their social media that the band were going on an indefinite hiatus. It almost felt like I had sensed it that there was something going on behind the scenes.

And now the really scary situation:
While I was in New Zealand, enjoying myself and having a real whale of a time, I had that dream one night in which someone at home died. Which in itself already isn’t a nice dream.
When I was back home, my Mom told me a day or two later that my Aunt – whom I had been really close to – had indeed lost her battle to cancer and died on the day I arrived in NZ.
This was SO weird that to this day, I still wonder what happened here. Was my subconscious really sending me a message here?

Now, of course you may argue that all those moments were just that – coincidences. Which is fine by me. But to me, those were clearly different. There were “shifts” and vibes I felt in those moments, as if there is more between Heaven and Earth that the eye can see and that we can in any way or form logically explain. Something that not even science can fully grasp. I am not saying that I indeed am “psychic” or – to refer back to the beginning of this post – have the Shining, but whatever was going on, there was something otherwordly, too.

So yes, those things happened to me. I didn’t make those up. I firmly believe that something happened that I cannot explain. No, I won’t go as far as saying that I, for example, rigged those draws in the cup competition. That clearly was for the sheer fun of it. But still, it felt absolutely weird when the clubs’ names were announced as the respective opponents. Same for the Champions League game back in ’05. The band going on hiatus shortly after I had felt that there was something off. And of course the dream I had.

My Dear Readers, I hope you won’t consider me entirely crazy now that I have written down my experiences with the Other Side of what is within our grasps. In fact, I would love to know if anything of that kind of experiences happened to anyone of you as well? Let me know in the comments, if you dare. Or drop me an e-mail if that’s more comfortable for you.

Take care!
